What if Iron Man lost the Civil War? (aka The One Where They Live Happily Ever After) | In this reality, all it took to avert the Civil War was Tony asking for Steve’s help. The two fight side-by-side against a common enemy and reach a compromise; Captain America and Iron Man run the Superhero Registration program together with the Avengers, instead of leaving it in the hands of the government. The world becomes a better place, and “so began a new Golden Age of heroes.”

Randella LaKeitha Whoreton: Why the Iron Man suit was important to Tony Stark's character during the Civil War.

wassamattawityucca:

pervyrasslincaps:

Let me talk about why I think Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit is so significant to his portrayal during Marvel’s Civil War.

image

So, if you don’t already know, Tony stays in his Iron Man armor for the majority of the Civil War. In fact, I remember it actually being made a point in the comics that he was almost never seen out of his suit.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but whenever I read Tony trying to talk to other people while in the suit, he seemed cold, callous, detached with his speech, because he was essentially a suit of armor relaying instructions.

image

Whereas although Steve Rogers wears his Captain America cowl, you are still able to see his facial expressions—his pain, anger, grief, frustration—and you can relate to him.

You can empathize with his emotions, his passion, because you can see his face. You can see his humanity.

Whereas Tony—or more accurately, Iron Man—was just a detached suit of armor going through the motions, who the readers couldn’t really relate to because they couldn’t see him.

And I think that was a major reason as to why more fans felt drawn to Steve’s side over Tony’s during the Civil War arc…not necessarily that Steve’s side of the war was always more objectively in the right, but because the readers could see…and thus, feel why Steve felt he was right.

But when Tony finally takes his Iron Man helmet off during The Confession (and in the few rare occasions when he comes out of his armor during the war), you can see how much the war has broken him.

image

You see Tony crying, breaking down. You see that it has taken a toll on his body and soul. You see that he has felt all of it, even though he didn’t show it.

You see that even with as much as he tried to distance himself from it, Tony has been human the whole time during the Civil War.

image

Iron Man wasn’t just armor to protect Tony from his enemies, but armor to protect him from himself—from his own humanity, which he knew that he had to discard in order to do all the de-humanizing things which he did in the name of achieving his ultimate goal—what he felt was “right.”

And that is why I find Tony’s Iron Man armor so important to his character during the Civil War.
